COUPLEs
Romantic relationships, while often very fulfilling, also can be fraught with challenges and difficulties. Many couples desire to be more deeply connected to one another, yet find that communication issues, family patterns, and unresolved hurt often get in the way of true intimacy. Couples therapy at Shalom Counseling focuses on helping couples to learn how to communicate and connect on a deeper emotional level, and to work through conflict and hurt in healthy ways.
Family & Family of Origin
The families we come from often play a large role in making us the people we are today. Families can be the source of much joy, but also the source of pain and hurt. Family patterns (both positive and negative) get passed from one generation to the next. Family therapy at Shalom Counseling takes a systemic view of the family, and works towards fostering more open and direct communication between members. This also involves looking at the legacy of your family and unhealthy patterns that have been passed down through generations.
DEPRESSIOn & anxiety
Depression is a complex yet prevalent issue that many people experience on a daily basis. Depression may be mild or seasonal, or it can be very debilitating. At Shalom Counseling we explore together some of the underlying reasons for depression, and help you come up with coping strategies to help deal with depression. I also can work with your psychiatrist to help make sure that any medication and therapy are working well together.
STRESS & TRAUMA
Many people have experienced or witnessed abuse or trauma in their lives. Abuse and Trauma can cause deep hurt, depression, physical pain, and mental health difficulties such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Life also sometimes presents times of prolonged stress that can take its toll. If you have experienced abuse or trauma in your life, it is never too late to find help in healing from these experiences. Therapy focuses on looking at the abuse, it's effects, and how we can regain our voice and trust to live healthier lives.
Grief
We all experience loss in life. Whether it is the death of a loved one, a pet, or the loss of a job, grieving is part of being human. Some losses are harder to work through than others, and sometimes therapy to help process grief can be helpful.
PARENTING DIFFICULTIES
Parenting can be one of the most rewarding jobs in life, but is often also one of the most difficult. Many parents find themselves frustrated and discouraged when parenting becomes tough. Having a place to talk about these difficulties and learn new ways of handling behavior and setting boundaries can go a long way towards parents becoming more confident their role as caregivers for their children.
ADDICTION
Addiction can take many forms, such as substance abuse, alcohol addiction, and sexual addiction. Often addictions can be covering untouched pain or stress, and they impact those around us. Beginning to discover the underlying reasons for addiction, seeking out alternative ways to deal with stress, and seeking greater support/accountability, are key to beginning to live life free from addictions.
